Are home pizza ovens that different? Well, apparently, Ooni, Roccbox and Bertello seem to think so.

Are These Pizza Ovens Even Worth It?

Ooni Fyra

Without a shadow of a doubt, yes. The reason why these might be better than your regular oven, is because they’re specifically designed for pizzas.

So, things like placement to max oven temperature are optimized for pizzas. Convenience is another factor that comes into play as well. Compared to your regular indoor oven, pizza ovens from Ooni, Roccbox and Bertello tend to be very easy to use.

No need to move the pizza here or move it there just because you’re not getting the crust you want. Just plop in a pizza, and you’re good to go.

In addition, they also reach higher temperatures more quickly. Now, I’m not aware of how power efficient they are, but it’s definitely a benefit not to have to wait for the oven to heat up. All in all, worth it in my book.

Shop Portable Pizza Ovens:

Now, Ooni has quite a few models for pizza ovens, while the others, well, only have one. For starters, Roccbox is actually the pizza model which is manufactured by Gozney. On the other hand, Bertello is quite new, and at the time of writing, they only have one model.

That’s mostly why Ooni is preferred by most, since you can choose from a couple of models on hand. Pizza ovens, which are tailored to your needs.

Anyways, the others are impressive in some ways as well, as we’ll see later on.

Ooni Review

Ooni has quite an impressive background. Ooni was the one to pioneer the portable wood pellet pizza oven, back in 2012. Since then, their repertoire of pizza ovens has expanded quite substantially.

But it is easy to see why most people jump to Ooni immediately when they’re looking for pizza ovens. Anyways, their first portable pellet pizza oven was so good, it changed the trajectory for pizza ovens quite dramatically.

Craftsmanship is the thing which generally differentiates Ooni from other pizza ovens. And, that’s the case when compared to the Roccbox and the Bertello.

They have quite a few models to choose from, each one designed for something different: Fyra, Pro, Koda, Karu, and more.

Even after such a big success, Ooni hasn’t changed much in terms of pricing. I mean, sure, they’ve got some models which are somewhat expensive, but they’ve still got an impressive price-to-performance ratio if I’m honest.

Ooni also pays a lot of attention to detail when it comes to designing new pizza ovens. It seems like Ooni never opts-in for: “It’s good enough”, when it isn’t. I think a lot of time and effort is put into designing Ooni ovens, and their success shows it.

If you were to go with Ooni, what are the pros and cons?

PROS

  • Impeccable quality
  • Amazing craftsmanship
  • A lot of oven types to choose from
  • Great value
  • Amazing price-to-performance
  • The original

CONS

  • Small opening on some models

Gozney Roccbox Review

Roccbox

I think Gozney’s Roccbox is pretty good. It manages a max temperature of 950°F and it has both gas and wood options.

It follows a well-known strategy for registration of customers, by incentivizing an extended warranty. Which, if you do opt-in for the extended warranty, it is longest than all three brands, which is damn near impressive.

The design of the pizza oven is not for everyone if I’m honest, but it does feel very durable. It has a soft lining on the outsides of it, which makes it a bit safer to touch, or at least, less likely to burn you if you happen to bump into it.

It has a temp gauge on the side, which is definitely helpful. For its size, it has reasonable price tag.

The main beef I have with it is the retractable legs. It’s all well and good that you have the option to retract them, but it can be a bit of a nuisance if I’m honest. Most retractable legs are like that, but it would have been nice to have some sort of a different design, something easier to tweak.

Since Gozney makes commercial pizza ovens as well, the experience does translate into some other great design choices with the Roccbox though. In fact, it can damn near match the performance of the Ooni oven.

Let’s review the pros and cons of Gozney’s Roccbox:

PROS

  • Soft & safe material on the outside
  • Temp gauge
  • Wide opening
  • Good value
  • Great quality

CONS

  • Lack of options
  • Retractable legs can be a nuisance

Bertello Review

Bertello

To be honest, I kind of had an issue finding a way to go about reviewing Bertello. I’m not sure I’m doing it any justice by comparing it to Ooni or Roccbox, but most are interested how it compares to these two.

What I will say though, straight out of the gate, is they’ve managed to pull off a very unique design, with the craftsmanship being surprisingly good. Furthermore, I think that it is a great value. It’s relatively affordable and you do get a lot for your money.

Now, obviously, in my opinion, it doesn’t perform as good as Ooni nor Roccbox for that matter. I’m not sure whether it has something to do with the design of it, or limited max temperature, but there is something there.

However, Bertello is still relatively new on the scene, and if they can pull off such a good pizza oven design the first time round, I am excited for the future of this company.

While you may not get the same performance as the other two, Bertello is a good budget-friendly option, and a good beginner’s option. Like I said, it has a good value, and you do get some accessories if you bump up to a higher package.

The accessories are the thing that does it for me, since you can get a good oven with a lot of accessories for the same price as the others.

Here are the pros and cons for Bertello:

PROS

  • Great value
  • A lot of good value packages with accessories
  • Sleek design
  • Very durable

CONS

  • Not as much performance as Ooni or Roccbox
  • Lack of options

Head-To-Head Comparisons

By now, you already get the idea of what you’re getting with each brand or pizza oven. But for those that are still on the fence of which one to pick, we go through the use-cases and try to find out which pizza oven is best for your needs.

Ooni & Roccbox VS Bertello

Bertello Charcoal

We put Ooni and Roccbox together against Bertello because the former brands are somewhat in the same price range, while the latter- in this case Bertello, is at a much lower price point.

I think Bertello is fine for those that need a pizza oven on a budget. It is a great value thanks to their different packages with different accessories, and it will do the job just fine. However, I should mention one thing.

In my opinion, there are obvious discrepancies in the performance from Bertello when compared to the other two, there just is. That doesn’t mean that Bertello is bad, but if you want the best of the best the other two are the way to go.

Ooni OR Roccbox – Which Pizza Oven Is Better?

Ooni Koda 16

Between these two though, things get a little more challenging.

These two offer somewhat the same performance, and they’re in the same price range. It may be down to personal preference here, as I can see no obvious differences or huge positives or negatives with each pizza oven.

In my case, I would go for the Ooni because they seem to be more well put together and they feel much more durable. And thanks to the problematic Roccbox legs, I definitely lean towards the stronger and non-retractable pizza oven legs from Ooni.

In addition, while if the Roccbox isn’t for you, there is no multiple designs to choose from, whereas Ooni has more than five different model lineups, with different sizes and uses.

Like I mentioned earlier, Ooni is also the original portable pizza oven as well. So, I’m taking that into account as well.

Final Verdict: Portable Pizza Ovens

No matter what we mentioned before, all three brands do offer unique pizza ovens. Some offer more performance than others, but for your usual Sunday, I think all three will do just fine.

Ooni is by far the most impressive though. They have a lot of different models and sizes to choose from, and almost all models have a stellar customer rating. There is no doubt that Ooni is the leading brand for portable and non-commercial pizza ovens.

Roccbox isn’t all that bad either. It has a bold design and some unique functionality. However, due to the lack of other models and sizes, or colors even, it lacks behind Ooni.

Bertello on the other hand is a great budget-friendly option. Also, if you’re a beginner pizza master, it may be a good place to start. For how short Bertello have been around, they’ve made quite an impressive pizza oven.
